Week Without Violence Day of Action

Categories: Activism, News

A week without violence day of action asks you to urge your senator to cosponsor and pass VAWA (s.2843) today. It’s time to demand action.  The #VAWA  has been enacted for decades and only recently expired.  So what’s going on? We deserve to know why they are not voting on reauthorization. #VAWA passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support and now it’s time for the Senate to act. Tell your Senators to cosponsor and pass VAWA (S. 2843).  It’s not new legislation, it’s continuing a program that’s been helping victims since 1994. Yet again, partisan infighting of minor changes is keeping this bill from moving forward and getting voted upon. YWCA-MC is committed to fighting for #VAWA and ask that you fight right next to us by contacting your representatives.

The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 was a United States federal law signed as Pub.L. 103–322 by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994. The  $1.6 billion the act provided goes toward investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women. It also imposed automatic and mandatory restitution on those convicted, and allowed civil redress in cases prosecutors chose to leave un-prosecuted.  Sounds fair right?  Where is the vote? The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019 (VAWA) (S. 2843) is critical and lifesaving legislation that maintains safety protections important to all survivors, particularly women of color and other marginalized communities. This bill also makes modest, but vital, improvements to provide the resources critical to supporting all survivors and their needs.
