Hearts and Minds, 12 Months of Outreach, Awareness and Celebratory Events

Hearts and Minds: a year-long series of monthly events presented by YWCA-Monterey County and our area Partners supporting dignity and equity for our community. Events will reflect our decades long commitment to social justice, our intent to engage the community in our work supporting survivors of domestic violence and trafficking and  a desire to celebrate our many supporters.

Breakfast of Champions

Hearts and Minds On October 18 from 9:00 – 10:30 YWCA-MC held our Breakfast of Champions, the kick-off event in our Hearts and Minds 12 month series of events. Thanks to our Lead Sponsor, Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas and our Advocate Sponsor, Natividad we packed the room at Community Foundation for Monterey County (shout out for the use of the conference room!). With donors, sponsors, funders and many of our wonderful community partners in attendance, we enjoyed a nice breakfast spread and introductory remarks from our Board Chair, Judy Tschirgi. Our main event was the introduction of our new CEO, Christine Duncan, who emphasized our commitment to cooperation with all the many players in Monterey County who work to improve the lives of vulnerable residents. We finished up with Taryn Keane, Community Resource Supervisor, who spoke on the many activities we undertook as part of a Week Without Violence.

Thanks to staff for a superb job in organizing this event.

Cookies and Caring

Hearts and Minds

November’s Hearts and Minds event is a month-long focus on giving back, as it is National Gratitude Month. YWCA-MC Volunteers will make cookies from the famous secret YWCA-MC chocolate chip cookie recipe. Cookies will be delivered by our staff to 10 of our non-profit partner organizations as a thank you to them for their help throughout the year.  Staff members will also volunteer at two of our community’s non-profits: Dorothy’s Kitchen and the Monterey County Food Bank.

Lighting of the Candelarias

ywca-mc eventWe held two beautiful “Lighting of the Candelarias” events on December 6 (thankfully the rain held off and we had gorgeous clear nights). Our clients, both women and children, plus some volunteers made almost 100 beautifully decorated paper bags with messages of hope, love and support. Each paper bag was then filled with small white rocks and an LED light so it would create a beautiful glowing lantern, or “candelaria” when placed outside.

Our first event was at the Salinas City Center First Friday event. The candelarias were placed at the Center’s Front entrance around the massive Christmas tree and down the steps. They were very popular. We staffed a table inside the center with other non-profits.

Our second event was at the King City Christmas Parade. The Candelarias were placed around the center of the town square in the middle of the area where vendors were selling food. We also had an informational table there.

January 30 3:30 – 5:30 Conversation Café on the topic of Human Trafficking Awareness

Our January Hearts and Minds event will be a Conversation Café on the topic of Human Trafficking. This is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. This invitation-only event will be held at Gordon’s in Salinas. 30-40 invitees will engage in small groups to explore thought-provoking topics related to Human Trafficking.

February 22nd, Racial Justice Film and Discussion

Our YWCA-MC February Events, Hearts and Minds, will be a free public film screening and discussion in honor of Black History Month. This event will be co-sponsored with the Monterey Peace and Justice Center.
