February 22nd, Racial Justice Film and Discussion
Our YWCA-MC February Events, Hearts and Minds, will be a free public film screening and discussion in honor of Black History Month. Please join us for a highly instructive February event: a Workshop on Racial Equity, Saturday February 22, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Monterey Peace and Justice Center, 1364 Fremont Blvd., Seaside, California. This event is co-hosted by YWCA-MC, The Monterey Peace and Justice Center, Whites for Racial Equity and the National Coalition Building Institute of Monterey County. We will be showing Shakti Butler’s excellent movie “Cracking the Codes”. This movie promotes highly interactive discussion and will be facilitated by JT Mason and Sue Parris of Whites for Racial Equity.
“Think we’re living in a post-racial world? Have trouble seeing how the phrases ‘racial equity’ and ‘racial justice’ apply to you or what you can do about it? More than 30 Monterey community members spent their Saturday, February 22 afternoon in deep discussion and contemplation of the internal and external structures that drive a self-perpetuating system of racial inequity. Using the World Trust video ‘Cracking the Codes’ produced and directed by Dr. Shakti Butler, discussion was facilitated by JT Mason and Sue Parris of Whites for Racial Equity and the National Coalition Building Institute. The film is part story-telling and part toolbox, and it is an excellent resource to start the difficult conversation about racialization, and how we as individuals are shaped by it. In two hours the group was able to talk openly about the causes and consequences of systemic racial inequity. They also were able to give examples and ideas about how to take individual action to combat it.”
YWCA MC thanks the Monterey Peace and Justice Center for their partnership in promoting the workshop and providing the venue for this event.”
